Appraisal | An expert estimate of the retail value of a stone or piece of jewelry. |
Baguette | A gemstone cut in the shape of a narrow rectangle. |
Bezel | A gemstone setting where a strip or wall of metal encircles the gemstone. |
Cabochon | A gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. |
Carat | A unit of weight measure (1/5th of a gram or 200 milligrams) used for stone weight. (note: carat is not the same as karat) |
Cubic Zirconia | A diamond simulant. A colorless form of zirconia that is very similar to diamond in refractivity and appearance. |
Elation | A feeling of happiness, joy, exhilaration and euphoria. Often experienced by recipients of jewelry pieces created by Jewels and Gems. |
Facet | Any flat surface of a cut stone. The arrangement and angle of the facets on a cut stone will amplify the stone's color and brilliance. A typical center stone diamond has 58 facets. |
Gemological Report | A descriptive document that lists the physical characteristics of a stone, including its measurements, weight, cut type, shape, color, species and variety, and also includes a picture of the stone. Also known as a Stone Identification Report. (see stone grading) |
GG | An abbreviation for the title Graduate Gemologist. |
GIA | An abbreviation for Gemological Institute of America |
Grading | The process of describing and quantifying the physical characteristics of a cut (or uncut) stone. (see stone grading) |
