| Rough cut | An uncut gemstone. |
| Semi-Mounting | A mounting that also accommodates side stones. |
| Setting | The act of securing a stone in a mounting (i.e. securing a diamond into a ring) |
| Solitaire | A single gemstone set alone in a mounting. |
| Sterling Silver | Silver of 92-1/2 percent purity. |
| Stone Identification Report | A descriptive document that lists the physical characteristics of a stone, including its measurements, weight, cut type, shape, color, species and variety, and also includes a picture of the stone. Also known as a Gemological Report. (see stone grading) |
