AppraisalAn expert estimate of the retail value of a stone or piece of jewelry.
BaguetteA gemstone cut in the shape of a narrow rectangle.
BezelA gemstone setting where a strip or wall of metal encircles the gemstone.
CabochonA gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted.
CaratA unit of weight measure (1/5th of a gram or 200 milligrams) used for stone weight. (note: carat is not the same as karat)
Cubic ZirconiaA diamond simulant. A colorless form of zirconia that is very similar to diamond in refractivity and appearance.
ElationA feeling of happiness, joy, exhilaration and euphoria. Often experienced by recipients of jewelry pieces created by Jewels and Gems.
FacetAny flat surface of a cut stone. The arrangement and angle of the facets on a cut stone will amplify the stone's color and brilliance. A typical center stone diamond has 58 facets.
Gemological ReportA descriptive document that lists the physical characteristics of a stone, including its measurements, weight, cut type, shape, color, species and variety, and also includes a picture of the stone. Also known as a Stone Identification Report. (see stone grading)
GGAn abbreviation for the title Graduate Gemologist.
GIAAn abbreviation for Gemological Institute of America
GradingThe process of describing and quantifying the physical characteristics of a cut (or uncut) stone. (see stone grading)
